  • Notes

    • Merle was born in Taupiri, and went to the same schools as her brother Les, then on to Takapuna High School. She played hockey and cricket for the school, and went on to represent Auckland as goalkeeper in the Auckland A hockey team, where she won many a game for them with her outstanding efforts. After leaving school, Merle worked at Farmers Trading Co. and made many friends there. She joined the Open Brethren, which had a major influence on the rest of her life. Merle left home at 16 to go flatting in Hamilton, and there became very involved in church activities. She worked as a receptionist in the X-ray Department of Waikato Hospital, and later in a private X-ray clinic in Hamilton, until her retirement at age 60.
Merle was a highly respected and loved member of her church, helping and working with young people at camps and bible classes. She also gave financial support to families on missionary work. Unfortunately, when she retired, Merle discovered that she had cancer. She fought it with a brave and positive attitude, and made the most of the remainder of her life until succumbing at age 72. Merle never married, but is remembered for her devotion to the care of children and young people of all nationalities, many of whom came to New Zealand to be educated at Waikato University. Merle became their mother or grandmother figure in New Zealand She was held in the highest regard by the people whose lives she touched.
