• Notes

  Selina was a writer. She spent 3 years in Italy with the family of her sister Anne, wife of Sir Walter Synnot. During her visit, both Sir Walter and his young daughter Anne Elizabeth (Anny) died in Rome in 1821. Selina recorded her travels, family matters and extensive religious commentary in her book Narrative of a Three Years' Residence in Italy, 1819-1822, With Illustrations of the Present State of Religion in That Country, published in 1831. She also wrote: A Sister's Stories (1833) Sketches of Irish history, antiquities, religion, customs, and manners (1844) Summary of Irish history; from the reign of Henry II to the beginning of the present century (1847). Selina inscribed in a copy of her book Three Years in Italy "From the author to her nephew James Martin Jan 1st 1834". The same copy has a further inscription: "Amelia C. Martin great niece of the Author Selina Martin, daughter of the Revd. Robert Martin Dean of Armagh." In 1851 Selina was living with her niece Anne Elizabeth Stewart in Brixton, Surrey. The 1851 census gave her occupation as "landed proprietor", the same as her niece. She died at Stone Street, Maidstone on 20 Nov 1859. She was living there with her great nephew, Rev. J. C. Matthews. The informant, who was present when she died, was E. F. Matthews. The death entry described her as an annuitant, so it is possible that her sister, Lady Anne Synnot, widow of Sir Walter, had bequeathed Selina some income.
