  • Notes

    • P. Hore Synnott Pedigree (1913), page 13:
'Marcus his heir, of Ballymoyer J.P. = Jane dau of Thos Gilson Esqr. of Wood Lodge, Co. Lincoln.
      High Sheriff Co Armagh, 1830. b. 21 June 1771 married 29 June 1814.'

As a child, with his brother Walter and sister Maria, Marcus features in the famous 18th-century painting "The Children of Walter Synnot Esq" by Joseph Wright of Derby. A detailed artistic analysis in 1986 of the painting by Emma Devapriam, Senior Curator of European Paintings at the National Gallery of Victoria can be found at http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/essay/the-synnot-children-by-joseph-wright-of-derby/).

Marcus graduated from Trinity College in 1790.

Burke's Irish Family Records (1976), in common with most authorities, gives 29 Jun 1814 as the date of the marriage between Marcus Synnot and Jane Gilson. This is not correct. It was actually 1813, as indicated by the "England Marriages, 1538–1973" database on familysearch.org which gives a marriage date of 29 June 1813 at Edenham, Lincoln, England and also by a notice in the Stamford Mercury of Friday 02 July 1813:
      'MARRIED
On Tuesday last, at Edenham, in this county (by the Rev. Henry Boulton), Marcus Synnot, Esq. Of Ballymoyer Lodge, county of Armagh, eldest son of Sir Walter Synnot, Bart. to Miss Jane Gillson, niece of George Parker Esq of Edenham aforesaid.'
The bride’s surname was probably Gillson - sources vary.

Marcus Synnot Esq. of Ballymoyre, was administrator of a large amount of farmland leased from the Church of Armagh (with many poor tenant farmers). He was the representative of the Setons of Parbroth, and a captain in the 66th Regiment.

His philosophy as a landlord can be judged from an article in the Cork Examiner, Cork on 5 Dec 1842:
'A Generous Landlord - Marcus Synnot, Esq., Ballymoyer, has generously reduced his rents 12 1/2 per cent from the year 1839; and has generously and willingly, at the suggestion made by his kind agent, Mr George Henney, proposed to have his lands valued in the course of the ensuing spring by a sworn valuator, the valuation to correspond with the present low prices of agricultural produce. - Correspondence of the Kerry Examiner. - [From a personal knowledge of Mr Synnot's management of his estates, we have the greatest pleasure in adding our testimony to his excellence. We do not know of a more worthy or deservedly beloved landlord than Mr. Synnot, or one who has more at heart the interests of his tenants - Ulster Times]'

In 1841 Armagh was the most populated county in Ireland, and there was great poverty among the lower classes.

According to the National Archives of Ireland Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1922 (4 Jun 1875, page 701):
"Letters of Administration (with the Will and 5 codicils annexed) of Marcus Synnot the elder late of Ballymoyer House County Armagh Esquire deceased who died 3 February 1855 at at same place (left unadministered by Jane Synnot an Executor and Residuary Legatee for life) were granted at the Principal Registry to Annie Synnot of Cawthorpe near Bourn County Lincoln Widow the Executrix of the Will of Marcus Synnot the younger the Residuary Legatee in remainder. (former Grant 8 April 1855)."
The effects unadministered were under £7.
