  • Notes

    • Together with Miss Richardson and Miss Mackereth, she was in the cast of her uncle Albert Richardson’s opera “Maritana” at Lowes’ Rooms, Stephen-street, Melbourne on 20 Dec 1877, under the name of “Elly Sinnott”.

      Elly Sinnott attended a fancy dress ball at the Fitzroy Town Hall on 17 Sep 1879.  She appeared as the Dancing Girl, a well-known picture in the public library.  The Mercury and Weekly Courier considered that it was “a very pretty and effective costume”.

      From 1883-1885 she was a principal chorus singer and concert performer, including:
      -         Oct 1883, the principal soprano in Plumptons” Mass in G”;
      -         Dec 1883, in Haydn’s  “Mass, No. 1” at St Patrick’s Cathedral;
      -         Jan 1884, a principal vocalist in Hummel’s “Mass in D” at St Patrick’s Cathedral;
      -         Jul 1884, at a Grand Concert in the Assembly Hall, Stratford, singing “The Voice of My Love”and “Waiting”.  The Gippsland Times said “The favourite song, “The voice of my love”, could certainly not have been entrusted to a better or more charming voice than that of Miss Sinnott who, we learn, is also a visitor from Melbourne. The young lady’s singing excited, as it well merited, the most enthusiastic applause; she possesses evidently the gift of melody which falls to the lot of but a few people and her voice has been most carefully cultivated...  Miss Sinnott, though not down for it, filled the next item in the programme by singing in charming style “Going to Market” for which she was most heartily applauded, and to which she most gracefully bowed her acknowledgements... “Moise in Egitto” was sung by Miss Sinnott, Miss Gilchrist and Mr L. S. Daniel, and it is needless to say it was rendered in an excellent style as to leave no room for criticism, even if the writer felt himself equal to the task... Miss Sinnott, Mr Henderson and Mr L. S. Daniel also sang again, and quite as effectively as before, but want of space prevents a separate notice of their songs.”;
      -         Aug 1884, as a vocalist in a concert in the Richmond town-hall;
      -         Oct 1884, as a principal in the Hallelujah Chorus at St Patrick’s Cathedral;
      -         Dec 1885, took part in performance of the cantata “Lalla Rookh” at the Melbourne Town-hall.

      Ellen and Frank Hanify married in 1891. In 1893 their only child, Gerald Francis Page Hanify, was born, but he lived for only one day.

      There is an Ellen Hanify on the electoral roll for Roma, Maranoa, Queensland in 1903 and 1905, but it is likely that this is a different person.

      By 1914 Ellen and Frank were living in Airlie Avenue, in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale.
