    • Reginald Boyland was a strange mixture. He was born in 1884 to James and Jane Boyland in 1884 in Charters Towers. Father and son were described as miners. In 1884 Charters Towers in the middle of a gold mining boom, which would continue for another 30 years.

In Nov 1913, Reginald married Mary Ann Elizabeth Pratt in Brisbane, according to the rites of the People's Evangelistic Mission. He was 29, and if the age given on Mary Ann Elizabeth's death entry is correct (it said she was 88 in 1960) she was 41.

On 29 Apr 1915 Reginald enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force under the name of "Robert Adams". Perhaps he used the enlistment alias to hide the marriage. He gave his birth place as Townsville, his age as 34 years 4 months, his occupation as miner, his status as unmarried and his next-of-kin as "friend of James Boyland" (probably his father or older brother, both were named James). In June 1915 Reginald embarked for active service as Robert Adams, attached to the 3rd Battalion, A. I. F., returning from Suez to Melbourne on 2 Sep 1915, declared a deserter, and was struck off on 20 March 1916. However, on 24 Nov 1915, he enlisted under his own name and became a private in the 11th Light Horse Regiment. He served in Egypt, where he was court martialled for refusing to be vaccinated, and he was admonished. After proving chronic rheumatism he was discharged from the A.I.F. at Brisbane on 1 Apr 1916 as medically unfit. He re-enlisted under his own name on 20 Feb 1917, and this time was placed as a private in the 20th Battalion, A. I. F. He served overseas, including England. However after going A.W.O.L. and then being hospitalised in England, he was again discharged from the A.I.F. in Sydney on 26 Mar 1919 as medically unfit, this time due to miner's phthisis (tuberculosis).

In Reginald’s WW1 papers, he mentioned his sister Lily - this would have been Lillian Lyra Boyland, born 1893. He noted her address as Surry Hills. This is in East Sydney, the same area as Reginald's first wife Mary Ann Elizabeth, and a slum in those days. In an electoral roll Lily was described as a barmaid.

When Reginald made a statutory declaration at Sydney on 4 Oct 1919 regarding his military service, he gave his address as 365 Glebe Road, Glebe, Sydney. When he made another statutory declaration in Sydney on 18 Nov 1938, regarding the loss of his discharge papers in 1926, he gave his date and place of birth as 1884 at Charters Towers (137 km from Townsville), his next-of-kin on enlistment as his wife Mary Ann Elizabeth Boyland and his current address as 39 Lower Fort Street, Dawes Point, Sydney. Perhaps he forgot that, 23 years earlier, he had named his "friend" James Boyland as his next-of-kin.

Mary Ann and Reginald may have moved to NSW from Queensland, and then separated, as Mary Ann was in Sydney by at least 1916, but not living with Reginald. Mary Ann was granted a decree nisi on her petiton for divorce in May 1935, on the grounds of Reginald's desertion and adultery with a woman whose true name was unknown to the petitioner, but who was known as Mrs Boyland. The divorce became absolute in Jan 1936, at the Supreme Court in Sydney.

From about 1930, Reginald and Maria Elisabeth Thick (nee Bak) lived together in Sydney, then for a period at Portland where Reginald worked as a labourer in the cement works. They then returned to Sydney and married there in 1936. By 1937 he was not working - it is possible that he was on a war pension.

Reginald and Maria had separated by 1943, and by 1949 he was in Queensland, living at the Queensland Hotel, Rockhampton.

The cause of Reginald's death in 1954 was cardiac failure and emphysema. The informant was his wife, M. E. Boyland, who gave her residence as 131 Pacific Highway, Hornsby, Sydney, NSW. The death certificate gave his occupation as miner, and did not list any children.
