      (1) the separate article prepared by Christine Page-Hanify on 24 April 2014 entitled " 3rd Great-Grandparents John Hanify and Catherine Page" for more detail on the life and work of Michael Lane.

      (2) the email (below) from Vincent Tickner to Rex Sinnott 13 Oct 2017 with further biographical details on Michael Lane and related people. Vincent was researching Arthur Cloutte, great grandfather of his daughter's mother. Arthur married Jane Isabella Lane, daughter of Michael Land and Jane Harris. Vincent's text confirms that Michael's daughter Annie was with Miss Blakey, and also advises that Annie was sent to a Convent Boarding School in Bristol for her secondary education.

Michael Lane was a civil engineer of some note. Born in London in 1802, he became a bricklayer and worked for Brunel, helping construct the 50 foot diameter brick shaft of the Thames Tunnel as a foreman bricklayer. Like Brunel, he was almost killed in 1827 in an accident in the tunnel during construction.

His marriage to Maria McSweeney has not been traced, but it was probably about 1835 as their only child, Annie, was born in Dec 1836. At the time of Annie's birth, her father was working on the Sunderland docks for Brunel senior as an engineer.

When Michael married Jane Harris in 1843, he was a widower, living at Hull.

Michael Lane Esq., M.I.C.E., chief engineer of the Great Western Railway, died on 27 Feb 1868 at his residence at Elmfield Lane, Southall, Middlessex after a short illness. Letters of administration of his personal estate and effects were granted to his widow Jane.

His obituary [1870 Institution of Civil Engineers: Obituaries] reads:

'MR. MICHAEL LANE was born on the 26th of October, 1802, in London.

His professional career commenced at the Thames Tunnel in the year 1885, when he joined the staff of Sir M. I. Brunel (M. Inst. C.E.).

From 1832 to 1834 he was engaged at the Bristol Docks as Resident Engineer, under Mr. I. K. Brunel (V.P. Inst. C.E.), and from thence he was transferred to the Monkwearmouth Dock, Sunderland (north shore), which he carried out, also for Mr. Brunel, and where he remained until December, 1840.

He then first became connected with the Great Western railway, acting as an assistant to [G. E. Frere|Mr. G. E. Frere], the Resident Engineer of the western division of that line ; but two years later he accepted the appointment of Resident Engineer to the Hull Docks; which position he occupied until August, 1845, when he rejoined the Great Western Railway Company, and became superintendent of permanent way of a division of that line. He continued to be so engaged for a period of fourteen years ; when, on the retirement of Mr. Bertram (M. Inst. C.E.), at the close of 1860, subsequent to the death of Mr. Brunel, Mr. M. Lane was made the Engineer to the company, and retained that office to the day of his death, on the 27th of February, 1868, in his sixty-sixth year.

It is said that for the last five years he had been more or less troubled with Bright’s disease, and had been enjoined not to overtax his powers. He had the reputation of possessing a thoroughly practical knowledge of the details of the execution of public works, and as a man was much esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances for his kindliness of disposition combined with honesty and integrity.

His remains were interred at Kensal Green cemetery, where a large number of the officers and staff of the company, in whose service he had spent so many years of his life, assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed colleague.

He was elected a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers on the 5th of February, 1861. Michael's obituary noted: "He had a reputation of possessing a thoroughly practical knowledge of the details of the execution of Public Works and as a man was much esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances for his kindness of disposition combined with honesty and integrity."
