    • Mary Sinnot/John Doyle

Mary Sinnot, daughter of Robert Sinnot and Mary Meyler of Bunarge, was baptised at the Lady’s Island church on 26 Jul 1834. The baptism register does not give the location of her birth, but it was probably Bunarge, where her siblings were born.

She married John Doyle on 29 Jan 1865 at the Catholic Chapel, George Town, Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. The celebrant was Mary’s uncle Dom Placid Sinnott, a Benedictine priest. The witnesses were John Cronin and Ann Starr. Both John and Mary gave their residence at the time of marriage as Bethel St, Merthyr Tydfil. John was aged 33, a bachelor, with the occupation of cordwainer, following the profession of his late father Thomas. The 1861 census gives John’s birthplace as Kerry, Ireland.

      Mary’s husband John Doyle:

John Doyle was an Irishman. His origins are not certain. The 1861 census gives his age as 27, and birthplace as Kerry, Ireland. The 1871, 1881 and 1891 UK censuses indicate a birth about 1832. Joannes Doyle (male) was born 10 Jul 1832 at Roscommon, Ireland, father Thomae Doyle and mother Catherinae Caffry . But no John born in Kerry has yet been found.

John has not been found in UK censuses prior to 1861. In the 1861, census Dom Placid was at 5 Bethel St, John Doyle was at 32 Bethel St.

Mary and John’s child John Thomas Benedict Doyle was born at Bunarge in 1866. The child’s birth record noted that Mary was attended by her sister Cate at the birth, the address of the father (John Doyle) was Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, and his occupation was grocer and shoemaker. The name John Thomas Benedict reflects both father and grandfather, and ‘Benedict’ probably recognises Mary’s uncle. However, JTB seems to have called himself “John Doyle”, so tracing him is difficult.

It seems likely that Mary had a close relationship with her uncle Michael (Dom Placid) who is known to have been in Merthyr Tydfil 1859-1865. Perhaps she met John Doyle on a visit to her uncle. In the 1861 census, Dom Placid was at 5 Bethel St. John Doyle, a 27 year old shoemaker born in Ireland, was a boarder at the house of Patrick Welch and his family at 32 Bethel St.

Dom Placid wrote in 1871 (6 years after he left Merthyr Tydfil), on a visit to Bunarge, that little Robert (son of Mary’s sister, Margaret Rossiter of Kilmore) and John Thos Benedict Doyle were very alike. This could indicate an ongoing connection between Mary and Dom Placid in England or Wales, or that Mary’s son was living at Bunarge in 1871.

The connection between Bunarge and Wales is not clear. Mary married in Wales in 1865, but her son was born at Bunarge in 1866, and was at Bunarge in 1890. In September that year he went to USA , but returned to Ireland. John Thomas Benedict married Lucy Canning at Tagoat on 14 Aug 1911, he was then a horse trainer at Ballyregan, Tagoat. Perhaps he grew up at Bunarge.

In the 1871 census, John is at Aberdare, Wales, age 38, a bootmaker, and boarding with John Ferris and his family at 18 John Street. Mary is a visitor at the Broad Street Catholic Chapel House in Chipping Sodbury, England, the residence of her uncle Michael (Dom Placid). Mary's brother William and her sister Eliza were also there as visitors.

Mary and her husband John appeared in the 1881 census at 50 Gadlys Road, Aberdare in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. John, but not his wife Mary, appeared in the 1891 census at 17 Dowlais Street, Aberdare in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. He was the only person at that address. John was still a shoemaker, but was "neither employer nor employed". The census describes John as married (i.e. not a widower), but Mary has not been located in the 1891 UK census. Perhaps she went back to Bunarge with their son.

Death entries for John or Mary have not been found.
