  • Notes

    • Nicholas Sinnott is recorded in the Lady’s Island baptism register as baptised on 30 June 1838 at Bunarge.  The birth entry has “Michael” added as a second (or changed) name.

As there is no Michael Sinnott recorded in the Lady’s Island baptism register in the 1830s, the most likely period for his birth, it is possible that he was the “Nicholas Michael” baptised on 30 Jun 1838 (and probably born shortly before that date) and still have inherited Bunarge as the oldest son, as the known children born before 1838 were all girls – Mary, Margaret, and Catherine.

An 1840 letter from Michael Sinnot (Michael’s uncle, a Benedictine priest known as Dom Placid) to his brother Robert refers to Robert’s “5 little ones” – they could have included either Michael (born 1833) or Nicholas Michael (born 1838), but not both.

Family sources say that Michael was over 60 when he married (in 1893), and that a carving “MS 1845” on a ceiling beam in the Bunarge house –assumed to have been done in 1845 - could not have been done by a 7 year old.  These clues both indicate a birth for Michael about 1833.  However, a birth in 1838 is more consistent with ages given in the 1901 and 1911 censuses and on his death entry. So, on balance, 1838 seems more likely, and Nicholas Michael is, from here on, referred to as Michael. Note that a second Nicholas was born in 1850.

When Robert died, Bush, Bunarge, and the attached Burrow shares passed to his son Michael, whose youngest brother Robert stayed on the farm with him.

Michael Sinnott and Kate Scallan were witnesses at the marriage of John Sinnott and Joanna Murphy in 1871.  Kate (Michael’s future wife) would have been 13 at the time, and Michael about 38.  Perhaps the witness was a different Kate Scallan.

Michael was listed in Bassett's Directory of County Wexford 1885 under "Farmers, Landholders, etc" as being at Bunarge.

The directory also listed, under "Churchtown", Michael Sinnott as Master of the Carne Brass Band. Phil Wall (born 1883 in Carne), in his article "What I Remember of Carne Parish" said that, as a very small boy, he remembered two bands in the parish, the Land League Fife and Drum Band and a brass band. The brass band was a rather unusual set-up; it was composed of six brass instruments, bass drum, side drum, triangle and bells. This band, comprised of ten players, did not march but performed on an outside jaunting car, four on each side, three brass instruments and side drums on one side and three brass instruments and triangle on the other side, the bass drummer behind and the driver played the bells. The car was drawn by a quiet powerful horse and he seemed to like his job as he marched along with his head erect and ears cocked while the band was playing. Every fine Sunday evening they would drive around the parish and one could hear the strains of our national music away in the distance. The whole outfit was owned by Michael Sinnott of Bunarge, who trained the members of the band. In 1978, an old sack of Sinnott letters was discovered in the ruins of Bunarge. Sticking out of the sack was a small brass trumpet.

Michael Sinnott and Catherine Scallan were married on 23 Nov 1893 at Tacumshane, Broadway in County Wexford. Their daughter Mary was born in 1895 and son Robert in 1898.

The Land Commission of Ireland broke up the baronies and sold the land to the occupying tenants in 1898.  At that time, Michael was the tenant of both Bunarge (17 acres) and Bush (20 acres).  The tenants of Burrow (155 acres) were entitled to buy their land, and Michael took his two-sixteenths entitlement. Nicholas Howlin was noted as a part-owner of Bunarge in the 1898 and 1902 documents relating to the land sales.  He is at Nine Acres in 1885 (Bassett’s Directory) and in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.  It is unclear how Nicholas acquired his interest in Bunarge (and any resulting interest in Burrow).

In 1902, the Irish Land Commission listed Michael as purchaser of 2 lots:
      Bush and Burrow
      Bunarge and Burrow.

The 1901 census of Ireland recorded the residents of a house in Bunarge (Ladys Island, Wexford) as:
Sinnott, Michael, 61, head of family, Roman Catholic, birthplace Co Wexford, Farmer,Read and Write, Married.
      The census also listed:
      Kate Sinnott, 48, wife
Mary Sinnott, 6, daughter – occupation farmers daughter
      Robert Sinnott, 2, farmers son
      Allice Murphy, 11, female cousin.

The 1911 census recorded for residents of a house in Bunarge (Ladys Island, Wexford):  Sinnott, Michael, 72, head of family, Roman Catholic, birthplace Co Wexford, Farmer, Read and Write, Married, years married 17, children born 2, children living 2
      The census also listed:
      Catherin Sinnott, 55, wife
      Mary Sinnott, 16, daughter
      Robbin Sinnott, 13, son
      Alice Murphy, 21, niece
      Michael Murphy, 49, servant

At some time between 1920 and 1924, Michael signed an undated will to replace his previous will made in March 1920.  In the new will, he left all his property to his wife Kate and his children Mary and"Robie" (Robert).  Michael's brother Robert was allowed to remain at Bunarge as long as he lived, and he was to be given the same allowance of tobacco (2 oz weekly) or 7s 6d instead if he wanted, and he was to be treated fairly and justly.  The witnesses to the will were Michael Gainsford and Nicholas Hayes.

Michael died in on 24 April 1924, and his landholdings passed to his widow and children Mary and Robert.
