Notes
This biography is largely based on information from "The Howell Family of Upper Waiwera" (Evagean Publishing, Auckland, 1998). Thanks to Evagean for permission to use it, and to Jack's daughter Anita Hendrey, who gave her approval. He was known as Jack to his friends such as bowls mates; but family knew him as Uncle Con.
'Jack was the youngest of 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls) and attended the Convent Primary School and State Secondary (Wanganui). He was apprenticed to a fitter and turner and worked at this trade in Wanganui until the family moved to Auckland about 1919.
Jack met and married Lyn in 1920 at St Matthews Church, Mt Albert, the witnesses were Lyn's sister Ivy and brother Victor. Their daughter Anita was born in 1921.
[This paragraph is from court records, not "The Howell Family of Upper Waiwera":]
However, life was not always easy for the family. Lyn left Jack about Apr 1926. In August, Jack wrote asking her to return. Lyn's response, through her solicitor, was that "she does not intend to return to her husband under any circumstances whatever." In the Supreme Court, Jack lodged a Petition for Restitution of Conjugal Rights, and on 16 Nov 1926 the court ordered Lyn to return within 21 days, but she did not comply. Jack started divorce proceedings, with a hearing to commence on 3 May 1927, but it appears that this did not take place.
About 1926/27, presumably after the court case, Jack and Lyn moved to Whangarei where Jack worked at the Portland Cement Works for 3 years before moving back to Auckland. He then worked for the Auckland Sandal Company on their machinery and made some new pieces that improved the production and although he applied for a patent, it is not known whether it was granted. He was clever with his hands and could turn his hand to make anything in the metal line.
In the early 1930s, Jack went to work at the Otahuhu Railway Workshops (catching the train to Kingsland Station every morning at 7am), staying until he retired in 1961. The move to Whenuapai Village also meant living close to family - Lyn's brother George had married Jack's sister Ivy, and niece Zita Horsley also lived nearby.
Jack loved gardening and fishing off the rocks from his small dinghy. He also played bowls for the Hobsonville Bowling Club and enjoyed horse racing and rugby league football.'
