  • Notes

    • This biography is largely based on information from "The Howell Family of Upper Waiwera" (Evagean Publishing, Auckland, 1998). Thanks to Evagean for permission to use it, and to family members Anita Hendrey, Kit Howell and Joy Spencer who gave their approval.

In 1903 at the Baptist Sunday School in Wanganui, Ivy sang "The Boyless Town". She had gained 140 marks out of 156 during the previous 6 months. In Jul 1907, Ivy gave a violin solo for St Pauls Band of Hope at the Opera House. She took part in many musical concerts.

Ivy was educated in Wanganui, at Sacred Heart School then the District High School.

When Ivy left school, she became a proof reader to the Wanganui Chronicle. The family moved from Wanganui to Auckland about 1919, there being better opportunities for employment. Ivy continued to live with her parents, and she became a proof reader for the Auckland Star until she married. The Auckland Star of 18 Jun 1922 reported:
'A presentation took place on Monday afternoon in the Jobbing Department of the Brett Printing Company, when Miss Ivy Olberg, who has been a reader for some years, was presented with an ivory dressing set on behalf of her fellow employees on the occasion of her marriage. Whilst in Auckland Ivy won a lady's hat at the Choral Hall Fete put on by the residents of the Royal Court and Friends.'

The couple lived at 19 Goring Road, Mt Albert, next to her parents at no. 17. However, they later joined her parents at no. 17 in the 1930s until moving to Grand View Road in Remuera. In the early 1950s, Ivy and George lived at Meadowbank before moving to Waimarie Road, Whenuapai where they spent the rest of their lives.

In mid life, Ivy and George had 2 trips to England and Europe. On return, Ivy resumed her hospitality skills. She was active in the Country Women's Institute and community happenings. George's uncle Mick Brunton and wife Ethel were regular visitors.

The grandchildren knew George and Ivy as Nanna and Poppa Howell, and remembered them for keeping an immaculate, attractive homestead. The house interior was Ivy's responsibility, her pride and joy. The lawns and flower gardens were George's constant source of satisfaction. Ivy was a good cook, George a consistently good grower of roses.

Ivy died in her sleep. Her ashes were scattered at Waikumete Cemetery.
