  • Notes

    • Phyllis was less than a year old when she moved with her parents from Australia to New Zealand. She lived with the family at Raroa Road in Wellington. Phyllis married George Aldridge in 1919 – they had 7 children.

It seems that Phyllis inherited the musical talents of her grandmother Annie Lane. On 25 Jun 1915, she took part in an instrument recital (violin and pianoforte) in the Concert Chamber of the Wellington Town Hall, in aid of the Wounded Soldiers Fund. In the "Free Lance" of 2 Jul 1915, the music critic considered that that the recital was "a revelation of the native talent that is developing in our midst".
After praising the violin concerto by Miss Frieda Walker, the critic said "another very notable item was the double concerto in D Minor by Bach, which was interpreted with marked effect by Miss Phyllis Hanify (piano) and Miss Frieda Walker and Eric Meier (violins). The tone produced was like that of an orchestra, so full and strong was it in volume. It is a difficult work - this Bach concerto - but it was skilfully done. Mr Eric Meier contributed several violin solos very tastefully, and Miss Phyllis Hanify's pianoforte playing was admirable."

Phyllis gave annual organ recitals at Wellington Town Hall about 1964. Recorded copies have been handed down through the family. She was also organist at St Mary of the Angel's church in Wellington for 43 years.
