  • Notes

    • William Thomas Howell was born in Foxton in 1906 and was only 21 months old when his father Thomas died. William's mother Rebecca, known as Rae, worked as a waitress, and married James Mist, a farmer, in 1910 at Woodville. James would not accept William into the family. Instead, William was brought up by Rebecca's parents, Charles William and Caroline Esther Marshall at Woodville, and took their surname.

William seems to have inherited some of the general Howell characteristics - being rather short, and his complexion tending to be dark. He was also something of an itinerant, perhaps in his father's footsteps.

After William (now known as Bill) finished his schooling, he worked for a time at the dairy factory at Eltham. He was at one time engaged to be married, but his fiancee died, and Bill remained single all his life. In 1929, his oldest step-brother Charles Raymond Mist died quite suddenly from pneumonia, aged just 18. Bill came to the family home, but stayed only overnight before continuing his rather unsettled lifestyle.

He was in Gisborne when World War 2 broke out, and he enlisted from there. Strangely, the person he gave as his next-of-kin was not a family member. During the war, Bill was a sergeant in HQ Company 25th Battalion, and served in the Middle East and Japan.

After returning to New Zealand, he worked on a farm out of Taihape as a cook. Some of the Mist family were then at Hunterville, where Bill visited them occasionally. Bill's brother Earle worked as a labourer on a farm. On one occasion Bill stayed several months to help look after one of Earle's sons after Earle's wife had a bad accident and spent a long time in hospital. His sister Daphne Stoddart saw him at Waipukurau. The last time his sister Dorothy Olsen saw him was at their mother's funeral in Lower Hutt in 1970.

Bill became a member of the Carterton RSA, where he was well-known and liked. In later years he lived at the Returned Services Home at Levin, where he was visited occasionally by his brother Wilfred, making up in part for the lack of contact when they were young. About 1980 Bill was transferred to Palmerston North hospital, and he died there shortly afterwards.
