  • Notes

    • This biography is largely based on information from "The Howell Family of Upper Waiwera" (Evagean Publishing, Auckland, 1998). Thanks to Evagean for permission to use it, and to family members Anita Hendrey, Kit Howell and Joy Spencer who gave their approval.

'Schooled at Upper Waiwera, George received a Waiwera Public School Good Attendance Certificate for 1903, when he was seven. As a youth, George saved up for a cornet, eventually going by horse to Auckland to purchase this instrument. He played tunes, including "God Save the King", as he rode up the valley on his return. He joined the Mounted Rifles in 1914 (under age) and served in Egypt. Old photos show him in the army band there. The Upper Waiwera War Memorial: 1914-1918, 1939-1945 in Upper Waiwera Road lists George W Howell among those who served in World War I.

In 1919, after his return to New Zealand, he was still a soldier living in Parnell, Auckland. Thanks to his brother Harold, he was employed by Winstones before learning the building trade and working for Alf Tozer and others. Once established, he took on many country jobs, including schools,, often living on the job - this could be very basic.

After he married Ivy Olberg in 1922, the couple lived in Goring Road, Mt Albert then Grand View Road, Remuera and Kinder Place, Meadowbank. He enjoyed woodwork and during the depression he was involved in making bookcases etc. at his daughter Zita's school, Brixton Road, while the other relief workers were making playgrounds from clay and rock.
About that time he made 2 model yachts for his young son Ron. They were nicely rigged for sailing when the family went on holiday to Waiwera. The larger one was too big for Ron to manage alone. For the 6 weeks of all school holidays, the family camped at Titford's Motor Camp at no charge - for old times' sake. From 1936, over the years, George built a dozen fine beach houses at Piha, including his own little bach. He and Ivy were for many years members of Grange Road Baptist Church, eventually moving to Remuera where they made more church friends at North Memorial (later Remuera Baptist Church).
Among the many houses that George built were a retirement home for Dorrie McCathie at Meadowbank, quite close to his own home at that time, and houses for Con and Lyn Olberg, for Ivy and himself, and for daughter Zita and her husband Jack (in 1949), all close to each other at Whenuapai Village.

George and Ivy retired to Waimarie Road, Whenuapai, where George was a foundation member of the Hobsonville Bowling Club. Lyn and Con Olberg also retired at the village and became similarly involved, living as good neighbours once again to their brother and sister.'

In George's will, made in 1949, he appointed Ivy as sole executrix and, if Ivy died before him, son-in-law John Pearce Horsley and sister-in-law Olive Olberg were to be the executors. As Ivy and Olive both died before George, the sole surviving substitute executor, Jack Horsley, was appointed. George's assets were to pass to his two children in equal shares.
