  • Notes

    • Marie Louise's birth, from research to date, was Jan 1836 or Jan 1838 in Calais, France. However some research indicates that she was born 6 years earlier (i.e. 1832) than she stated on her second marriage certificate, the birth entry of her child Lallie (which her husband filled in) and her death certificate (which her daughter filled in). However, her birth entry (written in French) indicates that her birth date was 28 Jan 1832.
Her father Louis was a Captain in the Italian Embassy in France, but was mainly a courier. His position as Captain is yet to be verified.
Marie Louise's sister-in-law, Emma Pheney (nee Mitchell), was said to be a fluent speaker of French, and to have spent some time in France earlier in her life, according to Natalie Sinnott.
At the time of the 1851 census, Marie was a teacher schoolmistress living at 1 Lipton Terrace, Plymouth, Devonshire with a group of women and girls, including Myra Kelly (38), also a teacher schoolmistress, and several students. A 2012 photo of 1 Lipton Terrace shows a large 3-storied building, still in excellent order. It was probably a school in 1851.
Marie's age is given by the census as 16, born in Paris whereas, according to her birth entry, she was born in Calais and would have been 19. Also, the oldest two students were aged 16, so she could well have been older. The census entry for Marie's age is probably incorrect.
She was a witness at the 1856 marriage of her future brother-in-law, Richard Cliff Francis Pheney, to Emma Mitchell.
At the time of Marie's marriage to Francis Pheney in 1859 at St Pancras Church, she was living at Harrington St - Francis was at Stanhope St. She was at 45 Stanhope St at the time of son Frank's birth (27 Sep 1860).

After Francis died in 1865, Marie and her daughter Louise Caroline Emma emigrated to New Zealand with R.C.F. and Emma Pheney and their 2 children. She travelled initially to New Plymouth but then settled in Nelson where, in 1870, she married Thomas Larchin, a Customs Officer. Their son Henry was born in Waimea West in 1872, and daughter Lallie at Westport in 1876.

Marie's occupation was as a school teacher.  She continued her teaching career as headmistress of Westport School. In the 1870’s there were several references to Mr and Mrs Larchin being teachers on the West Coast of the South Island at Westport. They were both highly regarded.

When Thomas transferred to Wellington with the Customs Department in 1879, Marie Louise probably moved with him. She was certainly in Wellington by 1893, as she was on the City of Wellington electoral roll for that year.

By 1912, Marie Louise and Thomas were living in retirement in Paekakariki (Thomas had retired in 1908).

The executors appointed by In 1912 Marie appointed her husband Thomas and her daughter Lallie Eleanor Larchin as executors of her estate upon her death. Marie died on 14 Jan 1922. In a letter of 21 Jan 1922, Thomas advised Lallie that he did not wish to take up the duty of acting as one of the executors. Thomas died intestate on 10 Feb 1922. Lallie then appointed the Public Trustee to be sole executor and trustee of her mother's estate in her place. Probate of Marie Larchin's estate was granted to the Public Trust on 8 Apr 1922 in the Supreme Court at Wellington.

In her will, Marie left everything to her daughter Lallie except named or described paintings which were left to her daughter Caroline Louise Emma Arnold nee Pheney. Unfortunately Marie does not say who painted them, but it is likely that the artist was her first husband Francis Pheney or his brother Richard Cliff Francis Pheney.
