    • Thomas was born in 1894 and went to the Upper Waiwera School. He died in World War 1. The NZ Herald of 16 October recorded:

      PRIVATE T. R. HURLEY

Private Thomas Richard Hurley, who has died of wounds, was the third son of Mrs and the late Mr Henry Hurley, of Upper Waiwera, and was 21 years of age. After service on Gallipoli he was invalided to Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, slightly wounded, and suffering from shell shock. After eight months' stay in England he rejoined in France, where he received the wounds which resulted in his death. He enlisted from Kihikihi, where he was in the employ of a business firm. His brother, Private James Hurley, was lately reported wounded.

Thomas Richard Hurley Private 12933, 1st Auckland Regiment, was buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen in Plot 21 Row B Grave 69. Rouen is a city some 150 km to the south of the Somme and was a large hospital area for wounded troops brought down from the battlefields by train.

Thomas is remembered, along with his brother James, on the Upper Waiwera War Memorial. They are among eleven names under the inscription

"In loving memory of the boys of Upper Waiwera School who in the Great War 1914-18 died on the field of honour"
