      THOMAS TORRENS ROWLEY MILLER (1853-1877)

Thomas Torrens Rowley Miller, the second son of Rev Alexander Rowley Miller and Maria Elizabeth Synott, was born on 16th December 1853 at the Heynestown Rectory and baptised at Heynestown. He was most likely named in memory of his Uncle Thomas Torrens Rowley Miller who has died the previous year.

He was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and enrolled as a British Naval Cadet on 2nd May 1868 at the age of 14 years.

According to his naval record, he trained on HMS Britannia. This was the training vessel based at Dartmouth. During his time at Darmouth, this ship was replaced by the HMS Prince of Wales and was renamed HMS Britannia.

He was gazetted a midshipman on 27th July 1869 and appointed to the Zealous, flagship of the Pacific Fleet on 26th February 1870. His naval record, however shows that he served on, the HMS Duke of Wellington, HMS Fawn, and HMS Duke (also known as Iron Duke. He was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 25th January 1874. With excellent reports, he was recommended for promotion to Lieutenant. He however, failed the Naval College examinations on two occasions and was discharged on 4th December 1876.

He then went to India. He died at Assam, India on 13th November 1877. At the time of his death, his profession was listed as a tea planter. He is buried at Dibrugarh, Assam, India.
