  • Notes

    • The name of Charles Nelson's wife was Emma, as noted in England census records, with a birth year range for Emma from 1840-1846 (with the 1891 census indicating 1834). There are 3 likely marriage entries for Charles Nelson and Emma:
Charles Nelson/Emma Richmond registered at Sheffield Jun 1861
Charles Nelson/Emma Brooks registered at Shoreditch Sep 1862
Charles Nelson/ Emma Harris registered at Liverpool Mar 1862.

Without direct evidence for which is correct, further investigation was needed.

There is no known connection for Charles with Sheffield, and no record of Emma Richmond being born in Kent 1825-1845.

The birth of an Emma Harris was registered at the Isle of Thanet Jun 1846, and she was christened on 30 Aug 1846 at St. John the Baptist, Margate, Kent, parents George and Harriet Harris. Margate, where Emma (Charles Nelson's wife) was born, is a town within the district of Isle of Thanet. A Charles Nelson (born Sweden) was a mariner at Liverpool in the 1861 census. So a marriage to Emma Harris in Liverpool in 1862 is a possibility.

The birth of Emma Brook was registered Dec 1840 at the Isle of Thanet. She was christened 8 Nov 1840 at St John the Baptist, Margate. Her parents were Francis Brook and Sarah, and there is some social commentary on this family:

On facebook.com in response to "Margate Local & Family History http://www.flickr.com/.../1681.../9526343872/in/photostream/ August 17, 2013":
'EllJay Guthrie round the corner from Duke St???? my 2x Gt Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Brook, was born at 3 Duke St, in 1843 .....it used to be a public house called Neptune's halls ........ the building is still there!!!! ....... Sarah's father, Francis John Brook (b.1808) was the licensed victualler and a mariner ..... i have a document somewhere that's shows that Francis was declared bankrupt, but cant remember what year ...... he moved his whole family up to West Ham somewhere between 1851 and 1859 ..... suspecting the move may have been brought on as a result of bankruptcy, but i could be wrong

Looking for any info on The Neptune Halls in Duke Street, Margate Kent. A pub/inn run by my great great grandparents, Francis and Sarah Brook. (there are many variations on different census entries - see title) They are listed in the 1841 and 51 census sheets living at 3 Duke st. Margate. (which i believe is the Neptune Halls) cannot find this family in 1861 census, but in 1871 census, they had moved to 51, Hallsville Rd, West Ham in Essex and Francis is shown with a new occupation as a marine store dealer. I would love to know more about the Neptune Halls in Duke Street, Margate, and about the Marine store. Cannot find any info on either of these businesses. I am also having problems finding Francis' birth, in 1841 he was listed as aged 30. Francis was a widower at the time of his marriage to Sarah (nee Clayson???) his first wife was apparently Harriet Kelsey, married Oct 13 1832 in Margate. 2 kids from marriage, Mary Jane b. abt 1832 and Jane Mary b. abt 1834. Harriet died in Sept 1837 vol 5 232 Any new info or family connections would be fantastic LJ

      Margate, Kent'

The key document in determining whether Charles Nelson's wife was Emma Harris or Emma Brook/Brooke/Brooks/Brookes is the 1871 census. This tells us that in the Parish of West Ham, in the Ward of Plaistow, Francis (a marine store dealer), Sarah and their children Henry, Clara, Anne and Thomas are at 51 Hallsville Road. All were born in Kent except Thomas (age 11), born at Plaistow, indicating that the family had moved to West Ham before 1860. The next census entry below, with no address given, is for Charles Nelson (a marine store dealer), his wife Emma (born in Margate, Kent) and their children Sarah C., Bertha R. and Charles F. Nelson. It seems probable that the Brook and Nelson families were living in the same house, or were next door neighbours.

It is feasible that Charles Nelson married Emma Brook in Sep 1862, as the Brook family had moved to Plaistow by 1860. The marriage was registered at Shoreditch which is 6 km from West Ham.

Based on the 1871 census, the conclusion is that Charles Nelson married Emma Brooks in 1862, not Emma Harris. Charles must have moved from Liverpool, where he was recorded in the 1861 census, taken on 7 Apr 1861, to West Ham soon after the census was taken.

Charles Nelson died on 25 Dec 1891, Emma was appointed as administrator of his estate (valued at £122) on 26 Feb 1892.

Emma married Edward Stephen Saffery on 27 Feb 1893 at St Michael & All Angels in Bromley, London. The witnesses were Albert Nelson (Emma's son) and Sarah Ann Payler.
