  • Notes

    • Mary's mother was Lucy Walter, but the identity of her father is not so certain. It may have been Theobald Taaffe, 1st Earl of Carlingford, or Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington. There are more details on Theobald in the Encyclopedia Britannica (1911), so this version has been preferred.

Burke (Dormant etc Peerages, 1866, on Sarsfield on page 472) says that Mary was the natural daughter of Charles II and sister of James, Duke of Monmouth. Mary's mother Lucy Walter was the mother of James by Charles II, but there is little evidence (apart from Burke) that Charles was also the father of Mary. Various other sources repeat Burke's assertion, without evidence, so the claim of a connection of the Sarsfields to royalty is most likely incorrect.
